When an individual takes medication in a way that was not intended by the prescribing physician, or takes someone else’s medication, this is considered prescription drug abuse. Prescription drug abuse is an increasing problem in the United States, with stimulants, opioids, and depressants being abused most often. Because prescription medication is obtained from a doctor many individuals are under the assumption that these medications are safe, but the truth is that when abused, prescription medication can affect the brain and the body in ways similar to illicit drugs. When abused, these medications place an individual at an increased risk for many negative consequences, including the development of an addiction, which can bring about even more severe consequences. At Four Circles we can help you break this dangerous habit and help you live the happy, healthy life you deserve.
Four Circle Recovery Center is an outcomes-driven wilderness based treatment program specifically designed for men and women, 18 to 28 years of age, who are primarily struggling with substance use concerns, such as an addiction to prescription medications. We offer an innovate approach to treatment that integrates an adventure-based wilderness experience with professional clinical care and therapeutic programming. Our approach to treatment creates the foundation for sustained recovery and life changing experiences for young adults facing the challenges of addiction, substance abuse, and co-occurring emotional or behavioral issues that may have sabotaged their success.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
If you suspect that your loved one has developed an addiction to prescription medication it is important that you step in to get him or her the help that he or she needs. Below are a few things you can do for your loved one:
- Talk to your loved one about your concerns without being judgmental. Make sure that your loved one knows that you have his or her best interest at heart and that you are going to be there to support him or her no matter what.
- Encourage your loved one to get the professional treatment that they need. Many times an individual is unable to overcome an addiction without help and a treatment program can help your loved one learn the skills needed to beat his or her addiction and remain sober.
- Don’t forget to take care of yourself. When taking care of someone with a drug problem it is easy to get caught up in his or her needs and neglect your own.
Why Consider Treatment at Four Circles Recovery Center
Abuse of prescription medications can produce a number of short-term and long-term effects that can be quite dangerous for the user. However, the exact consequences that an individual experiences is going to depend upon the medication that is being abused. Prescription medication abuse can lead to respiratory problems, dangerously high body temperature, disorientation, paranoia, and in some cases death. Additionally, abuse of any prescription medication can lead to changes in a person’s mood, perceptions, and behaviors. In some instances an individual may engage in risky behaviors putting him or her at risk for physical harm. With proper treatment the development of theses consequence can possibly be prevented, so the sooner treatment is sought the better.
Types of Treatment Offered at Four Circles Recovery Center
At Four Circles Recovery Center, our treatment model is designed to engage clients by immersing them in the natural world where they are inspired to cultivate self-reliance by being faced with compassionate yet uncompromising accountability. This model allows clients to reap the benefits of a therapeutic wilderness program while offering the opportunity to practice skills learned in real world settings. Finally, all treatment provided at Four Circles is gender-specific, with separate programs designed to meet the specific needs of both male and female clients.
The young men and women in our program go on wilderness expeditions that usually last from a week to ten days, and then return to our home base where they will continue to work on the recovery process for their prescription medication addictions. Program participants will remain on campus for about three or four days, during which time they will begin to connect with the community through meetings, service projects, and participation in adventure-based therapeutic groups, before heading out on their next wilderness expedition.
Programing at Four Circles consists of four levels, each of which has a number of specific guidelines and assignments for clients to complete in order to move through the level system. We use a variety of clinical and holistic approaches that allows us to meet each client’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs while also helping them to establish a strong foundation for sustained recovery. The following are among the many treatment methods employed at Four Circles in the treatment of prescription medication abuse and addiction:
Medication management: It is very common for individuals with pain medication abuse or addiction to also be struggling with a mental health disorder. Many times these co-occurring disorders will require the use of medication to help alleviate distressing symptoms. However, all medication needs for co-occurring mental health concerns are always decided on a case-by-case basis. For any client who requires medication management, Four Circles has a contracted psychiatrist and nurse practitioner, both of whom are available within 24 hours. Should a need arise, clients can be pulled from the field for an office visit.
Individual therapy: All clients at Four Circles will participate in individual therapy sessions on a weekly basis. Individual sessions allow clients personalized time with a therapist where they will be able to set achievable goals for their recovery, address specific concerns, and work through any distressing emotions surrounding their pain medication abuse.

Families who have loved ones in our program will receive ongoing coaching and therapeutic contact through weekly phone sessions with a primary therapist. Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
Prior to completion of treatment, all clients will participate in a one-week healing ceremony where they will engage in solo experiences that will help them prepare for the future. Once this rite of passage ceremony is completed, clients will return to base camp where they will work on aftercare planning, develop a relapse prevention plan, and create a support system that will sustain the progress they have made. Since we understand that recovery is a lifelong process that extends beyond a client’s time at Four Circles, we work closely with each client, their families, and referral sources to create a detailed discharge and aftercare plan.
