Canoeing trips are full of excitement and adventure in the great outdoors, but they also present a series of challenges. Not only do our clients have to learn to work as a team to paddle to their destination, but each must communicate and pull his own weight. Although they’ve had plenty of practice hiking and living together, in this setting, young people are able to test their interpersonal relationship skills in a fun and different way.
Clients may initially feel frustrated and unsure of themselves, but as they gather knowledge and practice their skills, they begin to build confidence in their ability to try new things and succeed. Perseverance, concentration, patience, teamwork – these are life lessons that simply can’t be taught in conventional therapy.
